In the early 1950s organizations throughout the city raised money through events such as the “Buy a Brick” campaign in which bricks to build the Appleton Medical center were “sold” at area gasoline stations for one dollar. This same commitment, determination and community support continues today and helped create the Appleton Medical Center Foundation.
Established in 1984 by the late Walter L. Rugland Sr., past president and CEO of AAL and the late Paul Groth, the Foundation has and continues to successfully support Appleton Medical Center and those activities, programs, equipment and facilities which promote community health and wellness. The Foundation is an organization of community representatives that works to create and support heath care initiatives through funding for the Appleton Medical Center facility and its programs.
The Appleton Medical Center Foundation, formed in 1983, plays an increasingly important role in the ability of the hospital to provide specialized services in a community of our size. Appleton Medical Center Foundation fund-raising has funded the following programs and healthcare advancements:
- MRI audiovisual system
- Therapy pool
- On-site daycare center
- Teen mentoring program
- Hospital chapel
- Anti-smoking campaign
- Appleton Heart Institute renovations
The following efforts were realized through the first capital campaign concluding in 2001, “Beating Cancer in Our Communities,” which raised $4.5 million, far exceeding the target goal of $3 million.
- Groundbreaking and construction of the Martha Siekman Cancer Center, which opened in August 2001 on the east side of the campus adjacent to magnetic resonance imaging services
- A new Breast Center in the west Medical Office Building
- This Inpatient Oncology Unit and Emergency Department renovations
Today, with more than $6 million in total assets, the Foundation continues its work to provide a source of income that will help ensure AMC’s future as a continuing leader in health care for the Fox Valley.
